“Vecchi,” meaning “old one” in Italian, included Pantalone, the wealthy miser, and Dottore, the pompous erudite. Versions of Dottore appear in examples as wide-ranging as the plays of Moliere, and in the character of Dr. Zoidberg from Futurama.
