“Vecchi,” meaning “old one” in Italian, included Pantalone, the wealthy miser, and Dottore, the pompous erudite. Versions of Dottore appear in examples as wide-ranging as the plays of Moliere, and in the character of Dr. Zoidberg from Futurama. Meanwhile, Pantalone’s greed and emotional outbursts made them one of the most important Commedia archetypes. “Pantalone” is also the source of the modern word “pants,” which referred to the baggy trousers Pantalone typically wore.![]()
